Dark Days

Rescue is seeing dark days.

It’s never, under the best of circumstances, a cheery avocation. But usually our quotient of despair stays slightly below our quotient of exhilaration. Not by much, but by some.

The news is bad. A Tn. rescue is out of business (lost job, house burned, property foreclosed on); a Carolina hoarder caught and overloading the beleaguered shelter system; two puppy mill busts in Texas; a shelter closed in Tulare County, California (a microcosm of the rest of the country) in a particular ungraceful manner. They put out on their petfinder page that there were no fees to adopt due to “financial considerations” (that makes no sense) and only the volunteers who worked with the shelter knew for sure. They put it out, I picked it up, put it out on the boards,and people started calling the shelter, the way people will do,and berated (possibly) for this closing which translates to lots of dead animals on the day of the closing.

Angry people got back to me and said that the email was confusing. Well, it wasn’t, but people have tiny brains. The shelter is now closed and whatever animals were there on the last day, 9/6, are now dead. The staff there had been under order From Higher Up to not admit to the closing.
Thus the confusion, for which I got blamed, what else is new, over whether they were closing. People called and the staff said “No we are not closing”.

People are always quick to criticize, especially in rescue, all sanctimonious and self-righteous because they are doing the right thing, they are giving up time and money and a regular life so they are entitled to blast anyone else, no matter the issue or the non issue. The old adage “Walk a mile in my moccasin” does hold in rescue; neither do basic manner, simply courtesy and extending the benefit of the doubt, do not hold in rescue.

Besides the bullies in rescue, and the vicious rumor mill which smears people until one may not mention their names without a barrage of unholy wrath from 100 different sources, who all say as the closing arugment “Let’s leave it now and this will be the last comment on it.” Always a joke. Rescuers cannot keep their opinions to themselves. So 200 more emails come in….and they are LONG, paragraphs…….. people area really motivated to write tomes on how bad everyone else is.

Besides that……. rescue is in deep trouble. Too many sicko hoarders (150 dead dogs being fed on by 100 live dogs),too many puppy mill busts nearly breaking the shelters’ capabilities, which are not great to begin with, and rescues going out of business because they are in deep debt and cannot feed themselves or their animals.

We are moving dogs as fast as we can, hundreds,thousands of miles,and Paws and Pilots is planning a bang up demonstration,moving 5000 dogs, to make the point. Until Paws and Pilots gets into my neighborhood, I’m stuck with my 12 years old car, which quit on my yesterday in my city of destination, and it took me 10 hours and $330 to finally get home with my fabulous little charges: 7 boxer puppies, destined for rescue in Colorado. My car is still over there.

So my husband says, Why are you moving dogs so many miles? Does that make sense? Can’t places closer to where the dogs are be found for them?

Well, even before all the rescues closing and the south and Texas dumping their puppy mill victims into the system, the south has never been a great place for animals. As one rescuer said, “Getting a home in _________ is not a favor to the dog.” I’m not mentioning the state. Too many of the southern states and several of the midwest states, have similar attitudes, that behoove ill for animals. And there is no place that is perfect and I don’t want the lectures that will inevitably ensure if I mention locations. All the arguments are obvious and well known and I damn sure don’t need to hear their boneheaded crap again. If you are living in a state that gasses animals, you have work to do.

But, the point is, to my husband, yes, I have to move dogs hundreds of miles,thousands of miles, because whole regions of the country are living in the 10th century and are manned by people hail from the shallow end of the gene pool, bunch of gun toting redneck pond scum batshit crazy. Not only from the shallow end of the gene pool, but from the same end that got peed in by some helpful bystander. Didn’t make much of a difference. These folks still have room temperature i.q.s. So we move the animals out out out and far far away.

Rescue needs fosters to fill the every widening gaps. Lots of fosters! Plase consider fostering! Please please please. It’s life and death.

New Mexico’s governor in June made gassing of shelter animals illegal. Lethal injection is the only legal and acceptable method. Now, if only North Carolina would get on board. They are gas-happy. Probably been sniffing too much of their own poison.

Nevada, Las Vegas, Lied Shelter, has 150 animals, beautiful cats, wonderful Staffie terrier mixes, a fox hound, great mixes, a couple of completely exquisite labs, many, many lost soulful little chi’s. So many that I asked if a hoarder had dumped these dogs or if a breeder had gone out of business….no, the answer is that there is just an abundance of them. Poor little things. So so so sad. Wondering where their family is. Smelling death.

Help them out.They never asked for this fate.

Kern County California

Many very unfortunate animals find their way into Kern County, a shelter in constant crisis of overcrowding. Many animals are dumped in this area. There are several pb GSDs, ranging in age from 1 year to 8, and they are all magnificent, regal, proud, knowing. Their situation is incomprehensible. Where’s my family? How did I end up here? Shepherds do not do well in shelters, not that many dogs do. See http://forums.gsdwest.com/ to see the Kern county GSDs, and GSD from all over the country. The Kern County dogs will be killed quickly. If you can help, that help must be now, lest it’s too late.

Kern County needs help!

I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.

Terrific animals! This shelter has worked hard to bring its kill rate down, cutting in half. They have fabulous cats and adorable kittens. They have a doll of a dog named Breezy, just a young girl, who poses for the camera! And she is adorable! As a cyberstalker, one gets exposed to all kinds of shelter conditions. True, we aren’t boots on the ground, but we deal with the volunteers who work with the shelters and we hear what they have to say. We see the pictures. We see the vomit in the cages, uncleaned. The poop on the floor, the catch poles, the terror in the animals’ eyes. The cats in the traps who may or may not be feral. One gets a feel for nicer shelters as opposed to “less” nice. Not saying it’s 100%. We get close. ACOs who care and work for adoption over killing frequently deal with us directly, create a mailing list, learn what our talents are, come to us with issues. One, right now, is trying to get her Texas superiors to go to lethal injection and dump gassing. We hear directly from her and try to provide her with what she needs. Many don’t have the time, and they are no less fine ACOs. The point is that progressive ACO use all available means and we are definitely part of the means.

One of the nicer shelters is in Blackwood, New Jersey. The animals are well-filled out, sleek, handsome and shiny. They didn’t enter the shelter in that condition. Many were abused, abandoned, left in back yards which is preferred method of abandonment among jerks who cannot think, have pre-frontal lobe damage or who are just too stupid to go on living. I have no clue what the hell they could be thinking. “Duh, we’ll leave them here, and they can order out for pizza.”

Not my point. Blackwood has the most handsome pit and pit terrier mixes. They are stunning, and they are in trouble. This is a public facility bound by law to take whoever knocks at the door. Space is always an issue. It’s critical now and some of these gorgeous, healthy, sleek, well-fitted out dogs may end up being destroyed.

Camden received two senior cocker spaniels today, one white and one gold — I guess they are cockers. They are completely bonded, said to be senior, no age given. Their owner died.

All us pet owners need to make provisions for our animals. We can’t leave it to chance. The unofficial “wishes” of the decedent don’t always receive a lot of attention. It turns into a discussion of convenience and inconvenience among friends and relatives. Not what’s best for the animals nor honoring the wishes of the dead. Make a will!

And look at these great animals — cats too, in great abundance!

Texas, Carrollton, how many can we get out before Tuesday??

Please circulate this latest group from Carrollton’s shelter (near Dallas). Joe is a great guy who makes every effort to try and get as many of the unfortunate souls who wind up here placed as possible. Several are owner-turn ins – poor White Socks, a pretty little dog, was left behind by her owners who took their other dog and just dumped her.

Sweet Angel is a 7 yr old PB Bassett Hound, extremely sweet, likes other dogs, cats, and kids, and so gentle she was all ready to nurse a young kitten.

Among others included below are Lucky and Princess, who were brought in together by a family who had them a whole two weeks, then decided they didn’t want them(!!), both have been altered, UTD on vacs, ready to go!

Due to the holiday we are sending out a day early. Thank you all for your support!

Carrollton Animal Services has prepared this list to support finding new homes or rescue opportunities for animals that may be euthanized on Wednesday, 07-7-09 this list is being sent to a number of rescue groups that have provided tremendous support to our organization. This very sweet, gentle lady was released to the shelter by her people who developed an allergy to her and could no longer keep her. She reportedly gets along well with other dogs, cats and children of all ages. She is 7 years old and is such a mothering dog that when a new kitten was brought into the house she began caring for it to the point she started to lactate (develop milk).

Both these sweet dogs were released to the shelter by a family who only had them for 2 weeks. They had taken them from a friend and now have decided they do not want dogs. So both are here now and hoping to be adopted into loving homes. They both are quiet , gentle dogs who not only get along well with each other, but with other dogs too. They are both altered already and have current vaccinations which will help them be adopted. While we would like to see them go together, we will let them go separately.

KHI: Chuck seems to have developed some type of skin rash/condition

It is always sad to see such young pups here at the shelter hoping that someone will come in and adopt them. Chuck here is no exception. Chuck was found running stray, and is about 3 months old or so. We estimate he will be a medium size dog about 50 lbs or so when he is full grown. he gets along with other puppies as he likes to play and rough house with the best of them.

Both these boys were brought to the shelter as strays and are now looking for a home to call their own. They both are not only handsome but as friendly as any dog could be. They get along great with each other and with other dogs too. They are on the calmer side, and are pretty well behaved.

What a handsome boy this guy is and I think he knows how good looking he is by the way he poses for the camera. he was found running as a stray, wearing only a collar without any identification tags on it, to show us where he lives. He is a sweet boy, a younger adult and he seems to get along well with his kennel mates. He knows how to sit if you ask him and he will nudge your hand for some love and attention.

This young boy was found as a stray wandering around the city with no place to call home. He is a handsome boy, who likes other dogs. When asked what he wants to be when he is grown up and he will tell you nothing but a great dog.

This very friendly fellow was found running the city without any one to look out for his safety. He is a friendly small to medium size boy who will kind of remind you of an uncle or kind older gentleman. He gets along well with other dogs and is neutered already as well.

White Socks here was picked up as a stray with a buddy. When his people came they decided they didn’t want White Socks anymore and signed him over. White Socks had to watch his buddy go home while he stayed behind. He is a sweet, gentle boy who gets along very well with other dogs and seems to like all the people he has met so far. He is neutered already but will still need to get his rabies vaccinations before he can go home. He is a good medium to large size dog about 55 -65 lbs.

This is the sad reality for to many pit-bulls in this world. This senior, lady was found as a stray it is quite obvious she has had many, many litters of pups and from the scars on her face, ears and body she has either been fighting or used as a bait dog. The scars from the heavy chain she wore can still be seen, the damage done to her teeth, and the home-done ear crop is evident as well. Although she has been mis-treated by people probably her whole life she still looks forward to seeing people everyday, she likes to go for long walks, and will protect you from dump tucks with a powerful bark as they drive by. Once you pet her, and become her friend she will not leave your side. We have not had her housed with other dogs, but we have let her approach other dogs while on a leash and while she is curious there is not signs of aggression or ill-will towards the other dogs.

Just look into her eyes, and you can see the harm people have done to her, yet she is still willing to forgive and hope someone will finally give her the love she so deserves.

This overly friendly kitty was caught in a humane trap when she smelled the good food inside. It was a hot day and when she came in she was quite thirsty and hungry. After we cooled her off she impressed us with her coolness.

This afternoon at the Galveston County Animal Shelter, 3412 Loop 197, Texas City, TX, 409-948-2485, were the following fine Dogs and Cats available for Rescue and/or Adoption. Note how many small dogs there are, how many have their shots (the staff tries to keep up with the shots as the dogs/cats come in–a hard task!), and note how many seem pure bred or very close to it.

The cats have returned to their refurbished magnificently painted cage-free room. A local Artist converted the room into a glorious tropical forest–well worth visiting to see it!!!

And there are several vaccinated healthy adult cats enjoying it–so many are OTI’s. You can assure anyone they will find the cats of their dreams there.

And there are kittens galore of every color and “tribe” from 6 weeks and up. There are several Mommas with their litters, and fostering would assure their future. Encourage your cat-loving friends to check them out.

Troubled Souls in Blackwood, NJ

These are some of the best shelter animals around. This staff treats them with tender, loving care. They are rehabilitated in mind, body and soul. They are healthy, loving and over the agonies of their mind. They are waiting for you. You cannot get a dud from this shelter, as you might from some others I know all too well: no dog from Blackwood will die in 3 days of parvo, unless it’s a total fluke! They have magnificant cats!
